Boosting Your Milk Supply with Lactation Cookies

Breastfeeding provides the ideal nutrition for infants, offering a perfect blend of antibodies and essential nutrients. While many factors influence milk supply, including frequent feeding and overall maternal health, lactation cookies have emerged as a popular supplement for breastfeeding mothers.

What Are Lactation Cookies?

Lactation cookies are a treat designed to increase milk production in breastfeeding mothers. They’re packed with ingredients called galactagogues, which are substances that are believed to increase milk supply. Some of those ingredients include:

  • Brewer’s yeast that’s rich in B vitamins, and believed to support milk production.
  • Flaxseed which contains omega-3 fatty acids and fiber.
  • Oats, whole grains that are rich in fiber and nutrients.
  • Fenugreek, an herb that’s also commonly used in lactation supplements.
  • While it’s not traditionally a cookie ingredient, some recipes also include garlic for its potential galactagogue properties.

Do Lactation Cookies Really Work?

The truth is that the science behind lactation cookies is inconclusive. Although many women have reported that their milk supply has increased after consuming them, it’s not easy to isolate the impact of the cookies from other factors that also influence milk production.

Those include frequent breastfeeding, which is the most effective way to increase milk supply; proper latch and feeding techniques to ensure that the baby is efficiently draining the breast; and overall maternal health and nutrition that includes a balanced diet and good hydration.

That being said, lactation cookies can be a nutritious and satisfying snack for breastfeeding mothers. They provide essential nutrients and calories to support milk production.

How Lactation Cookies Support Breastfeeding

Even if lactation cookies don’t directly increase milk supply, they can indirectly support breastfeeding in several ways.

  • Nutrient-rich: They provide essential vitamins, minerals, and calories that are needed for milk production.
  • Convenient snacks: They offer a quick and easy way to boost energy levels with new mothers.
  • Mood booster: The act of baking or enjoying a tasty treat can improve mood and reduce stress.

While lactation cookies are a delicious starting point, it’s always a good idea to consult with a lactation consultant or healthcare provider if you have concerns about your milk supply. They can provide personalized advice and support.

  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup melted coconut oil
  • 1 cup coconut or brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed mixed in ⅓ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit (optional)

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Whisk together the ground flaxseed with the water. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the oats, oat flour, brewer’s yeast, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  • In a separate large bowl, mix together the oil, sugar, flaxseed mixture, and vanilla until smooth.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until they’re combined.
  • Gently stir in the chocolate chips, nuts, or dried fruit, if using.
  • Using a cookie scoop or a spoon, drop balls of cookie dough onto the baking sheets about 2 inches apart and lightly press down on each one with a fork.
  • Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and allow them to cool on the sheets for a few minutes until they start to harden up a bit.

You can store these lactation cookies in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 10 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Remember that although these cookies are designed to support breastfeeding, they should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
